Birthday Shenanigans in Emmen, The Netherlands
Emmen, Holland is literally the country side of The Netherlands... it smells like cow poop and grass. It is a very quiet, calm city in which many families live. Since my company has a workshop here, my class was in this city and I got to spend my 24th birthday in this little town. Ever since I started working in O&G, for the past three years on my birthday, I am always in the middle of fuckin' no where for work... All my friends were jealous that I would be in Holland for my birthday, but little did they know that I was no where... Every year, my birthdays consisted of 1) Casino 2) Strip clubs 3) Cowboy/Country bar with like 10 guys. This year... was no different since those were the planned options for my 24th birthday.
Usually I would have to meet all new people to celebrate my birthday making it a bit lonely for me, especially when I travel overseas, but this time was different since I actually knew someone! It was really nice to have at least two friends, Bert & Mazen, that I know in this course to celebrate my birthday shenanigans in this middle of nowhere town with. I have not seen my frenchy friend since Mississippi training, so it was really good to see him again! :) I was also very lucky to be in a class with some very fun new friends to come celebrate with me as well.
Morning class was hard in that I was struggling with jet lag, but I survived through my course obtaining a lot of knowledge. At night we would all go out to eat dinner, hang out at our friend's place, have a few drinks at the bar, and eat more fried Dutch food!
Emmen has a very small city centre, but it is still very modern and clean. While we were walking around the city center, we found a cute homey bar, Eurostar, in the middle of one of the plazas and decided to check it out. They had poker and darts available as well as METER LONG BEERS!!!! But the best part of the bar were the people who worked there! I met some pretty cool new friends in Emmen, who even bought cake for my birthday :). Thanks guys!!! There were some crazy but (un)forgettable nights spent at Eurocafe. ;)
One of the nights in Emmen, though, one of the craziest nights... HUGE bell ringing, random people sing/screaming happy birthday, Dutch fried foods and a fried hamburger patty (?!?!?!?), darts, as Asian Bruce Lee man who did pushups balancing on one finger?!?!? IDK WHAT HAPPENED BUT THAT SHIT WAS CRAZY. haha
Although I was in the middle of nowhere, Holland, I still really enjoyed my time here and had a very memorable birthday. It really isn't about where you are, but who you are with that makes life unforgettable.
