Weekend getaway to Pensacola, Florida
This past weekend, we (me and students from Norway) decided to go to Pensacola for the weekend. We tried to get others from both my group and their group to go, but no one seemed interested since it was supposed to be a bit cold. My roommate Barbara and Mohammad from the other group last minute decided they would want to come. Everyone else missed out because it was perfect weather out all weekend! Friday we got out a bit late from class, so we reached our hotel at 11PMish (it's a 3.5 hour drive). Our hotel room at Margarittaville was nice and so fresh and so clean, clean! The decor was beachy modern with pops of turquoise to match the blue waters outside. We unpacked, got ready, and decided to try out the bars along the boardwalk. We went to Captain Fun, as recommended by Josh, and it was completely empty; we WERE Captain Fun haha. Apparently that night was the "gallery" which was a street long festival they hold in Pensacola every month. But we just decided to stay in the area and hang out in Gulf Breeze since it was late. We all had a good time getting to know each other a little more, talking, and having drinks. Petter and I were starving, so we decided to head out to the only place open, Waffle House, located past the bridge. Camila, Petter, Jeanette, and Mohammad have never had waffles before! So crazy! So we of course had to try some. I ate SO much.. fatty status. That night we all had awesome sleep with full stomachs and in a very comfy, warm bed.
Saturday, we had an amazing breakfast along the beach with crystal clear blue waters and skies as the backdrop. It was amazing weather outside!! Sunny, yet not too hot, and just the right enough wind to keep me cool while tanning. We all walked along the beach to get to the boardwalk since some of us did not have the proper swim clothing, towels, sunscreen, etc for the beach. After everyone got what they needed, we walked back to the hotel to go out tanning on the beach by the hotel. It was a long walk for me because I just wanted to go to the damn beach. When we all finally got back, I was ecstatic to get on the beach and lay under the sun. It was so relaxing to just be laying there under the sun, the wind blowing through my hair, my bahama mama drink in my hand, and the sound of the waves crashing along the shore. Mississippi has been very fun with my group, but it was SO nice to get away for a little. When it got a little too cold, we all headed up by the pool and tanned there instead.
For dinner we went to this little cute Italian restaurant called Lilo's. The atmosphere was great with homey Christmas lights and live music from an old couple. The food was alright, not the best Italian food I have had. After dinner, we decided to try out the other bars along the little strip of stores. We first went to The Islander where there was a live band playing upstairs. They were awesome!!!! Their music was funky and good music for my soul. All I wanted to do was move my head to the beat going UHHHHH!!! NUH NAH NAHH NAHHH!!! There were many people, all shapes, sizes, and ages, in all sorts of risqué clothing and costumes to celebrate the kick off start of Mardi Gras...... Some people were a bit unpleasant to look at... but it was quite entertaining for me. It's nice to know that there are people out there, no matter what age, who just do not give a SHIT what other people think and are having fun on their accord. I respect that a lot, and hope that when I get older to be the same way.
After going through all the little bars along the strip, we decided to head back to Captain Fun for their "House Music Party"... It was NOT house music, only Skrillex dubstep... But Jeanette, Camila, and I still had a very good time dancing! I have finally found dance partners who do not give a shit what other people think and just dance retarded with me! YEAYUHHH robot creeky arm dance will commence!!!!! Barbara, Camila, and Mohammad headed back early, while me, Jeanette, and Petter continued our night! Who goes home at 12AM?!?! WE DON'T!! haha I came up with drink roulette, where I told the waiter to make three drinks that look similar, but one drink just horribly strong. So whenever we got our drinks, I shuffle them around and someone is the one lucky winner. The first time we did this... I was the one lucky winner.. WHY?! hahah I jinx myself all the time, damnit!
Me, Petter, and Jeanette had a great time without everyone else! They taught me all the Norwegian words and statements I needed to learn to survive two weeks in Stavanger and I taught them all the Sophia Ugly Faces they will need. Mastering my ugly face is a very important talent to have. At the end of the night, we took a taxi back. Petter kept telling the driver to head to Waffle House or a place to eat but I firmly said NO I HAVE SUBWAY BACK AT HOME. WE ARE GOING HOME. hahaha So the three of us shared a little 6" Turkey Subway sandwich with a bag of Peach O Rings along the little corridor by the elevator (so that we would not disturb anyone)... fatty status.. We all had a good time though :)
Sunday morning, we again, started off with a delicious breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. The weather was not as nice as Saturday... but we were all hopeful that the clouds would clear up. Everyone wanted to go lay out at the pool, but me and Barbara went to walk along the beach and along the pier. It was a good decision too, because the clouds cleared up and it ended up being a prettier day than Saturday. There were a lot more people on the beach and there was such a great energy on the beach. Me and Barbara had basically a photo shoot along the pier with the bright blue green water in the background. Whenever we got back, me and Camila went on a 2 mile walk for Subway again along the strip hahaha. We just really love our Subway. I tried the little hot dog place called The Dog House. It was good, but my Chicago hot dog was not something I would come back to Gulf Breeze for. It was a nice walk there and back with Camila because of the amazing weather and just being able to have that time to talk one-on-one.
Once we got back to the hotel, we all changed, packed up, and decided to take the 3.5 hour drive back. I honestly slept the whole time because I was feeling sick and not too well. Sorry Barbara for sleeping the whole time! Oops! Whenever we got back, my group in Laurel were having a BBQ. I made it just in time too :) So we sat around grilling, eating, and drinking brewskis talking about all the things that happened while I was away. They said that it wasn't fun without me... something I already knew would happen :) ... haha Just kidding.
Overall, this trip was a fun, relaxing weekend. Pensacola was a nice getaway from the Mississippi weather and trees. Not only was it nice to have a change in scenery, it was also nice to just be able to hang out and get to know each other more on a personal level. Before this trip, I never REALLY got to talk to the students from Norway or my roommate, but I got to spend some time one-on-one with them and it was really nice to learn who they were. Jeannette also invited me to her birthday party the weekend I am in Norway.... so I CANNOT wait for that either! So excited :)!!! I am glad to be back home now, and hopefully I hope to beat the hell out of this sickness I've been battling for the past few days.
Anyway, next thing to look forward to... MARDI GRAS IN NEW ORLEANS!! Only two weeks from now! :)
